February 2010 Green Home Tour-2415 South Norman Street

For this month’s tour we will be visiting Beau Developments new urban lofts project in Seattle’s Judkins Park Neighborhood.  This community of homes are very unique not only for their extensive use of green building materials, but for the fact that they will be the first homes in the city of Seattle to be certified under the US Department of Energy Builder’s Challenge program.  They are estimated to provide their homeowner’s with a 40% reduction in energy costs over homes built to the 2004 IECC home

As with all of our tours, they are intended to be more than just a tour of a home, but a complete green building experience.  Participants are given an introduction to common green building materials at ecoHAUS and then a quided tour of a selected green project led by the people that are responsible for the homes design and construction.

Tour starts at ecoHAUS at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 13th and will conclude at roughly 2:00 pm at the Beau Development site.  Refreshments will be served at ecoHAUS before carpooling to the tour of these homes.

October 2009 Tour-Kirkland Duo by YS Development

Kirkland Duo East Home 2

This month’s tour takes us back to the Eastside and to another pioneering work by Yuval Sofer and YS Development.  We will be visiting the second home of the Kirkland Duo project.  The Kirkland Duo project is the first and second Built Green 4-Star homes in Kirkland.  YS Development has dedicated the past two years to this project and has assembled a dedicated group of architects, designers, and engineers to create these wonderful homes.  In December 2008 the West house of the Duo project was chosen as one of a select group of Built Green Case Study homes.

The focus of October’s tour will be the East home of the project  featuring sustainable building materials and technologies such as Advanced Framing, FSC Certified Flooring, a Green Roof, and a Heat Recovery Ventilation System.  Designed by renowned Place Architects and built to custom home standards, the Duo project  has been recognized by the City of Kirkland Green Building Program as a showcase of what is possible in well-designed, environmentally friendly, suburban new home construction.

The tour will be held on Saturday, October 10th, and will start at 11:00 am at ecoHAUS in Seattle’s SODO District.  We begin with a guided tour of the ecoHAUS facility and a survey of many common green building materials.  A light lunch will be provided and then it’s off to Kirkland to meet Yuval Sofer of YS Development for a unique perspective on green building and a thorogh tour of the home.  At the conclusion of the tour we will have representatives from Vesta Home Performance Retrofitting on hand to demonstrate the air sealing of the home with a blower door test.  This is a new addition to our home tours and is a fascinating look into the importance of proper air sealing for the efficient operation of any home.

Please sign-up using the contact form below.  You will receive confirmation of your attendance and detailed information about the day of the tour in an email response.

July 2009

Street FrontSince January we have been following the construction of these two great green homes in Seattle’s Columbia City neighborhood.  Aptly named Columbia City Green these homes are the latest contribution by Case Design and Project Management, a Seattle Design + Build firm.  This will be the second Case project we have toured in our ongoing series of educational green home tours and this will surely be one of the best yet.

This tour will be held on Saturday, July 11th and will start at 11:00 a.m. at ecoHAUS in Seattle’s SODO district.  We will begin with a tour of the ecoHAUS facility, enjoy a light lunch and then off to Columbia City Green for a guided tour, discussion, and Q&A with Tony Case, architect and owner of Case Design and Project Management.

May 2009

Dwell Development

The next stop on our continuing series of green home tours will be the most recent project by Seattle green builder Dwell Development.  Much more than just a walk through a home our tours are meant to be a unique experience where participants are given an introduction to common green building materials as well as a guided tour of a green building project by the people that played a part in it’s design and construction.  The hope is that you will be inspired to take on green building and remodeling projects of your own or at the very least get a snapshot of what is happening in Seattle area green building.  We visit only one home or project each month allowing plenty of time for viewing the home, asking questions, and engaging in discussion about all the many benefits of green building and a more sustainable approach to community development.  The tour this month will be on Saturday, May 30th and will start at ecoHAUS in the SODO district of Seattle at 11:00 am.  We will have a guided tour of the ecoHAUS facility, a light lunch, and then we will carpool to the project for a tour and discussion with Anthony Maschmedt and Julian Weber of Dwell Development.  Please RSVP using the contact form below and we will send a confirmation email with directions to both ecoHAUS and the project.  We will look forward to seeing you on the 30th.

April 2009

harbinger-1

This month we are going to be visiting a great green remodel East of Seattle in the Bridal Trails neighborhood of Bellevue.  Green does not necessarily have to mean small and YS Development is meeting the demand for luxury homes that are designed with the environment in mind.  This is a remodel of an existing architect designed home that is meant to make it fresh and relevant to today’s energy and environmental concerns.  We will meet on Saturday, April 25th at 11:00 a.m. at ecoHAUS in downtown Seattle and then carpool over to the house were we will meet the architect, builder, developer and designer for what is sure to be an interesting experience.  These tours are designed to give people a chance to learn more about environmental building materials and then hear from the people that are doing this great work.  Wander, ask questions, learn.  This is a truly unique experience and one that is hoped will inspire you to make thoughtful, considered decisions in your own home or the home of your future.  A light lunch is included at ecohaus.

February 2009

knoll-development-roosevelt-live-work

Please join us on Saturday, February 21st for a tour of this Live/Work Project by Knoll Development. Knoll Development is a local Design + Build firm that is creating smart living and working spaces with a special focus on enhancing the character of our neighborhoods. Our tour starts at ecoHAUS at 11:00 am where we will enjoy a guided tour of the ecoHAUS facility and a light lunch. Then we will travel to the project to meet Mark Knoll for a guided tour of the project and a discussion about the Live/Work philosophy.

Here is a brief excerpt from the Knoll Development FAQ’s page of their website:

  • It enables a “zero-commute” lifestyle.  Auto travel contributes a large portion of the greenhouse gas emissions that are responsible for global warming.  The shorter the commute to work, the less fuel you burn.  Even owners who use their unit entirely for an office can benefit from shorter commutes.
  • Creating pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods reduces the reliance on automobiles.  Being close to your customers, clients and employees cuts down on auto travel.
  • Using recycled land in urban areas saves open space and provides an intelligent alternative to suburban sprawl.
  • Combining living and working spaces makes the best use of scarce resources (one property not two)
  • Knoll live/work communities are located on the edge of activity, within walking distance to the vibe of a neighborhood.  They are also close to transit, further reducing the reliance on automobiles.

If you would like to join us on the tour please use the sign-up form below. If you could let us know how many will be joining us for the tour it would be much appreciated.  We will send a confirmation email upon receiving your RSVP which will include directions to ecoHAUS as well as directions to the house just in case you are unable to join us for the ecoHAUS portion of the tour.

We will look forward to seeing you for the tour.
